LES MILLS Virtual GRIT what’s it all about?
It’s a 30 minute high intensity interval training (HIIT) class that’s now available at Chilwell Olympia. It’s a class that delivers fantastic results:
- You’ll get you fitter faster
- Burn more fat than steady state aerobic activity
- Raise your metabolic rate
- Keep burning calories long after your workout has finished
There are three different classes to choose from; GRIT Strength, GRIT Athletics and GRIT Cardio. Each class mixes great sounds with a range of challenging exercises to create three unique programs.
Why HIIT?
HIIT has made its name as a fitness game-changer, and there’s lots of evidence to show its remarkable transformative effects. If you’re aim is to get fit the HIIT will help you to keep getting even fitter.
Results come from going as hard as you can for a short period of time, resting, and then repeating. It’s this formula of work and rest that allows you to keep reaching your maximum training zone repeatedly.
The science bit
LES MILLS GRIT has been developed so your heart rate reaches specific training zones for a certain amount of the workout; which means your heart rate is likely to reach 90 percent maximum for a period of 15 minutes. All within a 30 minute class.
Am I fit enough?
You will need a good base level of cardiovascular fitness and strength, as having done this class many times I can testify it’s tough! If you’re not quite there yet, then please build up your fitness first; we want to keep you injury free. Have a chat with one of the fitness team if you’re unsure as to whether it’s right for you.
How often should I HIIT it?
Just like other intense exercise; whether that’s cardio or resistance based exercise this is one time where more doesn’t mean better. Adding frequency won’t necessarily deliver better results. Too much HIIT can cause the body to become fatigued, reduce its positive results, and could result in injury. Recovery is just as important as the exercise in a fitness plan.
To start try replacing one of your regular sessions for a HIIT and for more experienced exercisers you could replace two sessions but that’s your max.
Importance of recovery
Unlike steady-state cardio, the magic of HIIT takes place after your session has finished. Your body has an ‘oxygen debt’ to repay, and this creates an excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). Very simply you’ll be burning calories hours after your workout has finished!
